Decoding the trends in remote and hybrid work.
First, thank you to all 650+ folks who signed up for our first-ever issue last week. We also received inputs, questions, and encouragement from 70+ readers. You all made our week! 🫠
Remote work was a common theme in many messages we received from our readers. Understandably, it is a top-of-mind topic for many of us today. High-profile tech leaders have been arguing for (e.g., Brian Chesky) and against (e.g., David Sacks) remote work for a while. However, credible data on how remote and hybrid jobs are evolving is hard to come by. So, this week, we dive into some data to find an answer.
Fully remote options have declined from their pandemic highs.
As of June 2023, 11% of the jobs on LinkedIn offer remote work (source). This is significantly down from 20% of the jobs on LinkedIn as of April 2022 and 15% as of November 2022 (source).
Large tech companies, particularly those that are public or close to IPO, are aggressively shifting from fully remote to hybrid or in-person work. Google, Microsoft, Apple, and Salesforce are trying to get people to attend the office more. Disney has declared a four-day-in-office workweek. Amazon and Meta have gone for three. Even the ones outside of the traditional “Big Tech” bracket, such as Outreach, Asana, and Docusign, have joined the return-to-office bandwagon.
Hybrid roles are still holding up - by and large.
Wfhmap is a live job tracker created by researchers from leading institutions around the world, such as Stanford, the London School of Economics, and Chicago Booth. It tracks job openings across the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Across all of these geographies, the percentage of hybrid jobs has decreased from their all-time highs, but only by 2-10%. This trend aligns with weekly office occupancy data from 138 cities reported by the Kastle Access Control System, which shows that office occupancy has been steady at around 50% (source) for the past 4 quarters.
Interestingly, regional variations exist in companies’ willingness to offer hybrid work. In general, tech hubs seem to have more hybrid roles. For example, Wall Street Journal reports that the city of San Francisco has the highest % of hybrid jobs among all the cities in the US. Similarly, the North-east and West USA regions have a higher % of hybrid jobs than the other regions.
Each of these data sources uses proprietary data and methodology. Hence, their data differ in the exact % points reported. But the overall trend is consistent across all these sources.
We’ll continue to include many remote and hybrid roles in our listing every week.
Thankfully, many high-quality startups still offer remote roles for engineers across experience levels. So, we will continue to include a healthy mix of remote, hybrid, and in-person roles in our weekly job updates.
This week, we have 17 remote roles, 8 hybrid and remote/ hybrid roles, and 25 in-person roles.
